Our loved ones may have lived through countless cycles of birth and death without ever having the chance to encounter the Dharma or understand its benefits. If we are fortunate to be introduced to Buddhism in this lifetime and gain even a little spiritual benefit from it, then we should sincerely repent and dedicate merits on behalf of our parents, so they too may have the opportunity to resolve karmic entanglements with creditors from past lives.

Chanting sutras can liberate the deceased because of the power of “virtuous thoughts.” Venerable Master Sheng Yen once said, “The purpose of Buddhist rituals is to recite sutras and expound the Dharma to these departed souls, helping them open their hearts and gain understanding, thus allowing them to be liberated.” In Orthodox Buddhism, the true meaning of liberation is to transcend the cycle of birth and death and to journey together toward Nirvana.

Some of our closest relatives may have passed away long ago. Even if we only now participate in Buddhist rituals and register their names for ancestral tablets, it will still bring them benefit. At the same time, performing these rituals for our deceased loved ones is also an expression of filial piety.

As the Lunar Seventh Month arrives, let us come together to participate in the Emperor Liang Repentance Dharma Assembly, and dedicate merits to our parents, loved ones, and ancestors from this life and countless past lives. May we sow seeds of goodness for them, and also cultivate conditions for our own spiritual growth and wisdom.
