Dedication of Merits to Earth/Residence Spirits

Every place has its Earth/Residence Spirit, who resides and relies upon the land. By setting up a tablet, doing offerings and dedicating merits of our spiritual practice to these spirits, we not only help liberate them from suffering and bring them joy but also encourage their transformation into benevolent guardians of the household.

For these spirits, this act serves as both a harmonious gesture of mutual respect and an expression of the residents’ compassion and goodwill. Such generosity not only helps resolve unseen conflicts but also plants the seeds of blessings, safeguarding the home and inviting prosperity. Through this practice, we cultivate harmony, protection, and the accumulation of virtuous karma.

Liberation of Karmic Creditors
Karmic creditors are sentient beings with unresolved karmic ties and entanglements formed with us over countless past lives. These entanglements—ranging in depth and complexity—often create invisible obstacles in our present life, affecting our physical and mental well-being, family harmony, and career progress.

When the conditions ripen for karmic creditors to manifest, how should we respond?
The Buddha teaches us to approach such situations with compassion, bearing the mindset that “it is better to resolve enmity than to create it.” Even if they come to collect karmic debts, we should use righteous approach to guide them, transforming this karmic encounter into an opportunity for mutual repentance, resolving past animosities, turning negative connections into positive ones.

By setting up tablets and dedicating merits for karmic creditors, we respectfully invite them to the Dharma assembly to hear the teachings and join in the collective cultivation. Through receiving the merits generated from the pure chanting of the Sangha and the blessings of the Dharma, we help guide them toward liberation, joy, and rebirth in a better realm. In return, our own fortune may improve, leading to peace of body and mind, and the growth of blessings and wisdom.
