Since ancient times, Buddhists all over the world celebrate the Buddha’s birthday with the Bathing of the Buddha ceremony.

In this significant ritual, one would fold his palms and bow to an infant Buddha statue sincerely. Then, while kneeling in front of the infant Buddha statue, he pours fragrant water over the right shoulder of the statue three times mindfully while saying the following:

“May I eliminate all evil thoughts”
    “May I cultivate good deeds”
“May I help save all living beings”

It is relatively easy to wash away physical dirt, but much more difficult to cleanse one’s inner impurity of greed, hatred and ignorance. Through the Bathing of the Buddha ceremony, we vow to cleanse the inner impurities of our thoughts, speech and actions to eradicate greed, hatred and ignorance, and to cultivate merits and wisdom. This is the true meaning of the Bathing of the Buddha ceremony.

Shah Alam Buddhist Society will be launching our Online Bathing of the Buddha on 25th May. Stay Tuned! 🌸
